噢，要是爸爸這會兒回來多好啊！這種煎熬她一刻也忍受不下去了。她又一次不耐煩地向路上張望，卻又一次讓她失望。

這時，太陽已經落到了地平線以下，天邊的紅霞漸漸變淡，頭頂上，蔚藍的天空也漸漸變作柔和的青綠，好像知更鳥蛋的顏色。周圍靜得出奇，鄉野間暮色四合，悄悄把她籠罩起來。不知不覺四周已是一片朦朧。紅土壟溝和開裂的路面褪去了神奇的血紅色，變成了普通的褐土。大路對面的牧場上，騾馬、奶牛把頭伸出圍欄，等主人趕它們回牲口棚吃夜草。它們不喜歡牧場小溪邊上那一片黑黝黝的樹叢，就衝著斯佳麗抖動耳朵，彷彿對有人與它們做伴表示感激。

在這種異樣的昏暗暮色中，河邊沼地上高大的松樹，要是在陽光下會是一片油綠，這會兒在灰濛濛的天空襯托下，呈現一團團黑影，活像一排無法穿越的猙獰巨獸，遮擋住了在它們腳下緩緩流淌的黃水小河。河對面的上坡上，韋爾克斯家那幾根高大的白煙囪，漸漸隱沒在周圍橡樹枝葉那濃密的黑影中，唯有遠處那幾點吃晚飯時餐廳里亮起的燈光，才能顯示出那兒是一座房屋。她周圍散發著溫暖濕潤的春之芳香，含有新犁過的泥土氣息和才吐芽的鮮綠氣味。

落日、春天、新綠對斯佳麗來說都不是什麼奇迹。這些東西所包含的美，她只是漫不經心地去看待，如同對待她呼吸的空氣、喝的水，因為她從來沒有意識到美除了在女人的臉上、馬匹上、絲綢服裝之類的實實在在的東西上存在，還能存在於其他任何東西中。但這時，塔拉農場細心耕作的田地里籠罩着的那種暮色中的寧靜，卻也給她惶惶不安的心靈上帶來一種安寧。儘管自己意識不到，但她深深地愛着這塊土地，好比祈禱時燈光下媽媽的面容一樣讓她始終深愛着。

蜿蜒的大路上依舊毫無動靜，還看不到傑拉爾德的身影。要是再這麼一直等下去，黑媽媽一定會來找她，把她攆回家去。就在她向昏黑的大路上使勁張望之際，只聽小山腳下傳來了馬蹄聲，牧場上的牛馬驚得四下散開。傑拉爾德·奧哈拉正縱馬穿過田野飛馳而來，馬上就到家了。

Inthestrangehalf-light，thetallpinesoftheriverswamp，sowarmlygreeninthesunshine，wereblackagainstthepastelsky，animpenetrablerowofblackgiantshidingtheslowyellowwaterattheirfeet.Onthehillacrosstheriver，thetallwhitechimneysoftheWilkeshomefadedgraduallyintothedarknessofthethickoakssurroundingthem，andonlyfar-offpinpointsofsupperlampsshowedthatahousewashere.Thewarmdampbalminessofspringencompassedhersweetlywiththemoistsmellsofnew-plowedearthandallthefreshgreenthingspushinguptotheair.

Sunsetandspringandnew-fledgedgreenerywerenomiracletoScarlett.Theirbeautysheacceptedascasuallyastheairshebreathedandthewatershedrank，forshehadneverconsciouslyseenbeautyinanythingbutwomen’sfaces，horses，silkdressesandliketangiblethings.Yettheserenehalf-lightoverTara’swell-keptacresbroughtameasureofquiettoherdisturbedmind.Shelovedthislandsomuch，withoutevenknowingshelovedit，loveditasshelovedhermother’sfaceunderthelampatprayertime.

閉上眼睛，我分明看到，一個叫Scarlett的16歲的美國姑娘，在美國南方耕地季節美麗的黃皆時分的風景里，心裏懷着一個小女孩懷春有關一個小夥子的小密秘，聽說這小夥子訂婚了，而訂婚對象是別人而非自己。Scarlett在這美麗的風景里，等待自己的父親回來，忐忑不安地以證實那個她不願意接受的消息。

相當真實的描述。個體生命的存在體驗，Scarlett所經歷的這一段，很典型，很特定人之常情。
