MorethanacenturyafterEuropeanexplorersfirstlandedinNorthAmeri-ca,therewerestillnopermanentsettlementsintheWesternHemispherenorthofSt.Augustine,Florida.By1607,however,asmallgroupofEnglishsettlerswasstrugglingtosurviveonamarshyislandintheJamesRiverinthepresentstateofVirginia.In1611,ThomasDale,governorofthecolony,wroteareporttothekingexpressingthecolonists’determinationtosucceed.Despitediseaseandstarva-tion,Jamestowndidsurvive.Thefirstsettlerswereentrancedbythenativeinhabitantstheymet.TheydidnotatfirstrealizethattheseearlierAmericans,likeEuropeans,hadculturalvaluesandliterarytraditionsoftheirown.Theirliteraturewasentirelyoral,forthetribesofNorthAmericahadnotyetdevelopedwritingsystems.Thisextensiveorallitera-ture,alongwiththefirstwrittenworksofthecolonists,formsthebeginningoftheAmericanliteraryheritage.HistoricalBackground  [返]
