就在那一瞬間，她就想得到他，就像她想要東西吃、想要馬騎、想要張柔軟的床睡一樣想要他，就這麼簡單而不可理喻。

兩年來，他和她一直做伴走遍了全縣，參加舞會、炸魚餐會、野餐會、上法院旁聽審案等。雖沒有塔爾頓家孿生兄弟或是凱德·卡爾弗特來得那麼頻繁，也從不像方丹家的小兄弟一樣那麼纏人，但是，他每個星期都要來塔拉莊園拜訪的。

真的，他從來沒有對她有過愛的表示，斯佳麗在別的男人眼裏屢見不鮮的那種火熱的光芒，在他那雙清亮的灰眼睛裏一次也沒有閃現過。但是——但是——她知道他是愛她的。這在她是絕不會弄錯的。強過理性的直覺，得自經驗的知識，都在告訴她阿希禮愛她。有多少回她驚訝地發現，他凝視着她的時候，眼神既不慵懶，也非遙不可及，而是露出一種令她茫然不解的渴望和憂傷。她知道他是愛她的。可是他為什麼不告訴她呢？真叫她費解。不過他這個人，叫她百思不得其解的地方還多着呢。

他總是那麼彬彬有禮，可又是那麼孤高，那麼遙遠。誰也不明白他心裏在想些什麼，斯佳麗就更不明白了。在這個地方，人人都是有話直說，而阿希禮這種含而不露的性情頗令人惱火。在縣裏平日的各類娛樂活動中，譬如打獵、賭博、跳舞、政治活動等，他和所有的年輕人一樣，都很在行，而且在他們當中他還是最出色的騎手；但是他和別人有個不同之處，那就是對他來說，這些娛樂並不是人生的目的和目標。他在自己興趣方面可謂獨善其身，喜歡書和音樂，還愛好寫詩。

噢，他怎麼會有那麼漂亮的一頭金髮，那麼孤高卻又那麼彬彬有禮。他談的話題是那麼煩人，都是什麼歐洲啦，書啦，音樂啦，詩歌啦，以及諸如此類的她絲毫不感興趣的東西——可是又偏偏那麼想聽，這是為什麼？有多少個夜晚，斯佳麗和他在昏暗的門廊上久坐之後，躺在床上輾轉反側，幾個小時都不能入睡，就用那個唯一的期待自我安慰，那就是下次見面時，他一定會向她求愛。但是這下一次來了又去了，卻沒有任何結果——唯一的結果是她心裏的愛火越燒越旺，越燒越熱烈。
